Physical Geography

Bayan Ulgiy aimag covers a corner of northwestern Mongolia comprising 45,700 square km. This is a mountainous region, characterized in the winter by extreme cold and wind with precipitation primarily in the form of mountain snow; in the short summer, the temperatures can be high and the air extremely dry. Throughout this region, vegetation varies depending on elevation, orientation of slope, and available water. Sandstone, limestone and granite dominate the geology of this region.

Michael Bednar is an award-winning photographer recognized internationally for his travel and documentary work, which captures the spirit of people and places.

Michael worked for several years in natural resource management where he embraced his love of the outdoors. He now incorporates the knowledge he gained from that work into his photography. Upon graduating from The Western Academy of Photography Michael worked in the daily newspaper business gaining invaluable experience. Training Golden Eagles for falconry.

The purpose of this site is to share my experiences of the Golden Eagles that have been a large part of my life, with anyone who may be interested.

From my early days as a young boy flying my first male golden eagle above the wind batted cliffs of my home island of Jersey in the Channel Islands, I had always been in awe of the eagle masters of Central Asian history.

Three decades later I was to live and ride with the berkutchi in the Kyrgyz Tien Shan and Mongolian Altai mountains.
